The story of《在我左右》
I am a sentimental little person…These are some of the things I keep in a huge box filled with precious stuff people have given to me..
This is a “lor soh” entry… just this once, because I am sure you would not mind a few more sentences talking about something so close to our hearts as ..love.
Have you had moments…
Where you have the urge to tell the people you love that you love them but fall short of words?
You want to give them a long hug, wishing everything you wanted to say will be transpired…
Have you had moments you told yourself you’ll never ever want to loose the people you love…
Singing at Weddings… and inspiration for 《在我左右》
Some of my private gigs involve singing at weddings and I’ve done this for bout three years now. There are definitely “it” moments when I get exceptionally touched while performing a song at such occassions as they only remind you of how beautiful love is.
Back in December, I met a very unusual guest at a wedding. She told me she was moved by my singing, we chatted and I learnt that she runs her own business and also deals with live music but her job is not common. She provides funeral services. She shared her views on how at weddings we sing about love and celebrate life, and how in her line of business, the same songs can provide comfort and express best too, the words we want to say when we loose our loved ones.
Call it coincidence..in the same month, Xiaohan and myself met with the producers of Mediacorp Channel 8’s new drama series《紅白囍事》to discuss the theme song for the show. The storyline turns out to be along the same context as my chance encounter with this wedding guest I met.
I started to search deep within myself on what I wanted to express in this song. Poured myself into watching videos and reading stories online.
I watched a video of a baby named Eliot and his heart-wrenching story of having only lived 99 days but his parents celebrated and documented every day of his life. When he departed, 99 balloons were released into the sky, each representing a day of his life.
I never cried more realizing we are all equally vulnerable and blessed at the same time. That in the midst of chaos we face everyday pursuing our lives, we are constantly surrounded by people who love us and whom we love, and how their prescence have given us the courage and strength to live each day beautifully and gloriously. And at every opportunity, we want to use all our capacity to protect them, and if only they knew, from our little gestures and words, how much we love them too.
As I continued to sing at more weddings over December, and while Baby Eliot’s story stayed in my heart, it became clear to me that I wanted to write the song for people around me whom I love, a song that you and I can sing to the people we love dearly. I wanted it to document the love, the memories, the warmth, how they give meaning to our lives, and how something so special as this will never ever change.. not even with time.
One night midway through my gig, these words came to mind which became the english lyrics for my demo for this song:
“I can’t live without you, I can’t breathe without you
You are, every reason why I am a stronger person
I can’t live without you, I’ll be by your side
Till we both grow old, Till our lives run dry, Right until the end of Time.”
I scribbled them down, went home, sat in front of my piano and finished writing the song.
I reminded myself to always cherish, and I hope this song will make you want to run up to the people you love and care for, and tell them how much you love them. Read the beautiful mandarin lyrics that Xiaohan penned for this song here.
