Singing at《新加坡e乐大赏》

Last year, I was backstage with Jiahui and The Amps at the Singapore e-Awards. Never would I have thought that a year later, I would be singing at the preshow of the same event.

I performed two of my originals《受保护》and《LaLa》that day. Every song, I feel, has its story, and its beginnings. For me,《受保护》was the song through which you got to know me and my compositions. It makes it all the more special reading messages you leave on Facebook or blogs that the song accompanied you through tough times. DJ Ken from Radio1003 told me during soundcheck that《LaLa》(the FNN jingle song) a duet with my 师兄, 伍家辉 ranked no.19 on 全球流行音乐金榜 (Global Chinese Golden Chart) that week.

When I first started writing, I had one simple wish to write songs that would be reflective of our lives, you and me, songs that would accompany us through love, heartbreak, and the ups and downs in life.. and I am sure every musician, like myself, would cherish every opportunity to perform our works for people. So to hear the audience at e-Awards responding and singing along when I sang both my songs, to hear them cheer me on, to see them wave at me from where they were standing or seating, it was and will always be such a precious feeling, and one I will never take for granted.

When I was speaking to the audience in between my songs, a girl in the front audience near the stage waved for my attention. When I turned to look at her, she happily stuck her hand out in the air, holding her iPhone which had the picture of the little girl I drew for《受保护》(that was sent out with the mp3 to supporters who requested for the song). It got me so touched I lost my train of thoughts for that moment! Hee!

It was quite a crazy week getting ready for the show. With a little dash of fate, I met local designer Vaughn Tan who provided the dress I wore to the event. Someone so very passionate about what he does, and who is also an avid music listener. You have to see his beautiful dresses here! I also wanna thank the great team at Jeric Salon for the lovely hair and makeup!

As preparations for my album progress, I continually count my blessings for my mentors, my record label, the media, all of you sweet supporters, and the companies and guardian angels I’ve met who have opened doors of opportunities for me along the way. I know it ain’t easy, nothing really is 🙂 but it is all of you who give me strength and makes it all so worthwhile. And I continue to be humbled and work my hardest. 继续加油咯!!!!

Confessions at Huayi 2010

I was really excited to be featured in the Huayi 2010 Singer-Songwriter Showcase @ Esplanade Concourse last Saturday.

As a singer-songwriter, it means alot to be able to perform our originals and share the stories/inspiration behind them with people around us. I called it confessions up there.. because most of my songs are inspired by real stories and it was a nice feeling to share them with an audience up close and personal. I also received messages on my Facebook & Twitter pages from fans looking forward to the show and YAY! I get to spend a cosy afternoon with them.

Was verging on no sleep that week bugged by insomnia (who visits me so very often)… regardless it was a fully energetic week prepping for the show amongst ongoing recording for my album. Of course you have worries about reaching the high notes, remembering the lyrics etc but I forget all my worries the moment I hit the stage coz performing live is simply exhilarating. Love it!

Accompanying me on pianos was singer-songwriter Ruth Ling. She is my sweet room-mate on Stefanie Sun’s “The Answer Is…World Tour”. We share a lot of laughter together on the tour as roomies and we brought that laughter onstage! (you will see from the photos!)

Apart from my originals ”受保护“, “LaLa”, “Best of You and Me” and two jazzy covers of CNY songs, I performed a new song ”在我左右“ (which you will be hearing pretty soon) for the first time. Its a meaningful song about life, love and treasuring people around you. 小寒老师 penned beautiful lyrics for it. When I shared the story of the song, I saw someone put her head on her friend’s shoulder, some couples looking at each other and holding hands…sweet.

Had really fun and HAHA moments with the crowd when I performed the happy song (and F&N Jingle) “LaLa”…I love making people happy. Whee!

Was really touched by how fantastic and responsive the audience was! The clapping, the groovin…There were a few sweet senior citizens in the front row whom I assumed were going to leave after the CNY songs, but they stayed throughout and clapped along when I sang “LaLa”! Aww!

Thank you all who came and for being such a great audience! You guys really made me smile to the power of a zillion and I had so much fun 🙂 Picture time! I wanna thank some sweet peeps on my Facebook Page for sending me some great pics of the gig! Do keep em coming!

Thank you Esplanade!
